Featured Poet – Claudia Messelodi

In 2009, Claudia wrote her first poem Sky-blue Wisteria. In April 2010, we printed this poem in EoTE together with a beautiful photograph of the wisteria that inspired it. Since then, Claudia has had her poetry published, not only in EoTE, but also in a number of other publications.

In March 2012, Claudia released her first poetry collection, entitled “Sky-blue Wisteria”. In her review, Freya Pickard said this, “What I like about Claudia’s poetry is that it makes you think. It’s not disturbing but rather makes you pause and ponder, consider things on the edge of consciousness. “

In April 2013 she released her second poetry collection ” Variations of Sky and Soul”. This work has been described as “both heart-warming and heart-breaking”.

How to submit articles & musings to EoTE

We occasionally publish articles and musings in EoTE.
These are short pieces of writing between 100 and 500 words and can be anything; a review, thoughts on the theme, an opinion that is related to the current theme.
We are looking for; excellent use of English, snappy, precise, punchy articles or reviews and intriguing musings. You can also submit flash fiction (100 – 500 words) in this category. (Please see our guidelines on short stories for what we are looking for).
Articles and Musings need to relate in some way to the published theme and need to highlight an unusual feature or take an oblique look at the theme.
The maximum word count for an article / musing / flash fiction piece is 500 words. Please submit up to 2 pieces in the body of your email. Please DO NOT send an attachment. Please include your name, country of origin and your blog/web site. We will acknowledge your submission usually within 7-10 days but may not be able to tell you whether we will be using your piece until after the Reading Period has closed. We ask respectfully that if you submit a piece of writing to us, that you do not submit it elsewhere until we have been in touch with you to let you know if we are using it or not.
Please check our Submissions Pages for our Reading Periods.

Elusive & Mysterious

I did like Claudia’s poem “Dove” – it speaks of freedom, hope and love.
from H.C., Tasmania
Elusive and mysterious cover by JBH. Beautifully fits with Claudia’s haiku. Enjoyed Heather Connelly’s poem and her mountain painting which captures its essence. Frost by JulesPaige is appealing. Love the snow scene by Freya Pickard. EL Bennett’s hilltop photograph is dramatic and somehow mysterious, trees stark against the sky, the vertiginous sudden cut off of the hill. Am impressed too by Linda Turner’s poem; vivid imagery. Freya’s Echo Peak – the opening paragraphs so atmospheric – beautifully done. The whole vividly alive. There’s a strong sense of place and through it all runs tension – and then what an anti climax!
from Penny Sylvester, UK
If you would like to read Shadows & Silhouettes, please send an email to ends-of-the-earth (at) h2m (dot) myzen (dot) co (dot) uk with Subscribe EoTE in the Subject line. Our Feathers & Fish-tales issue will be available in June 2013.

Submitting a short story to EoTE

We enjoy reading a good short story. The shorter, the better.
What we are looking for; excellent use of the English language, stories that leave the reader wanting more but not feeling disappointed, entertaining stories, tales that delight, inspire or make us shiver.
We will publish anything except erotica, horror, excessively violent or crude stories.
Writers in the past have included Jenny Poulter and Freya Pickard but we are open to other submissions, from both men and women.
The maximum word count for a short story is 1,500. Please submit one short story in the body of your email. Please DO NOT send an attachment. Please include your name, country of origin and your blog/web site. We will acknowledge your submission usually within 7-10 days but may not be able to tell you whether we will be using your story until after the Reading Period has closed. We ask respectfully that if you submit a short story to us, that you do not submit it elsewhere until we have been in touch with you to let you know if we are using it or not.

Submitting poetry to EoTE

We love to promote poets who do something different with their writing.
What we are looking for; good and unusual use of the English language, words that leave readers with vivid images in their mind’s eyes, and poetry that says something.
We like blank verse, formal verse, humorous (but not crude) verse. In the past we have published haiku, elfje and variations on these forms of poetry. Rhythmical verse goes down well but not verse that is self-consciously rhyming.
We don’t like chopped up prose. If you would like to submit a short piece of prose, please submit it as an article or a musing.
40 lines is the maximum we can accept for publication. Please send a maximum of 5 poems in the body of one email. Please DO NOT send an attachment. Please include your name, country of origin and your blog/web site. We will usually reply to your email within 7-10 days and will let you know whether or not we can use your work.

Appreciate…

I love the poetry and appreciate Freya Pickard’s story, because her writing is easy to read for someone who is not English.
